JOHANNESBURG â€" As the land debate rages on, the country’s ambassador to Brazil believes South Africa can learn from the South American country. It has been de aling with issues of indigenous land rights and supporting emerging farmers.

The latest tweet from US President Donald Trump on South Africa’s land expropriation programme is sparking outrage.

Trump said he has asked his secretary of state to look into the matter of "seizing land from white farmers".

Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the ruling party would forge ahead with plans to amend the constitution.

This would allow land to be expropriated without compensation.

South Africa’s ambassador to Brazil, Ntshikiwane Mashimbye said the model used by Brazil is one way to achieve this effectively.

“Brazil has managed to use agriculture to take out millions out of poverty to middle class...the most important part is to use families and small farmers and e merging black new farmers and bring them into agriculture in general... “

Brazil and South Africa face similar challenges in resolving poverty, inequality and unemployment, attributed to the slow pace of land reform.
